The Miller Dowel is a stepped, solid-wood structural
fastener that forms joints from the outside in. And
unlike other methods of wood joinery, our dowels require
minimal tools and can be installed exactly where they
are needed in any woodworking project – from the
outside in.
Design Features of Miller
Dowels
The key to the Miller Dowel is its unique patented stepped
design which has several benefits. The first section
acts like a clamp that securely holds the first piece
to the second. The second section gives the joint shear
strength. The remaining sections bond with the anchor
piece to form a secure joint. The sections of the Miller
Dowel are not tapered which means that the glue surface
remains intact through the entire length as the dowel
engages with the wood.
There are three sizes of Miller Dowels
• The
1X for attaching wood pieces up to 1 1/8” thick
• The 2X for wood pieces up
to 1 5/8” thick
• The Mini-X for joining
1/2” stock (maximum 3/4”)
Also available is a 1XSR Dowel and companion Dual Bore
Drill Bits that have been designed specifically for
use in commercial cabinet and furniture production.
For more detailed information on any of these Miller
Dowels please click on the product name above. Miller
Dowels are stepped to achieve three or more separate,
parallel diameters. For strength, between each of these
is a radial ledge of 45º. The dowels are turned
to a furniture-grade tolerance of +/-.008”, and
they are kiln dried to a price moisture content of 7%
to 9%.
TruFit® Drill Bits
Miller Dowel’s TruFit® Drill Bits, which are
stepped to match a correspondingly-sized Miller Dowel,
are made from industrial-quality high speed steel for
longer cutting life. They are designed with an aggressive
helix and polished flutes for efficient chip removal.
Three positive locking flats are ground on the shank
to prevent spin-out, and a split point prevents “walking”
along the grain. TruFit® Drill Bits form precise
pilot holes that provide a perfect fit for the parts
to be joined.
Dowel Species
Miller Dowels are available in 10 species. For Interior
Projects the dowels are available in Red Oak, Black
Walnut, Birch and Cherry. For Exterior or Interior Projects
you can choose from dowels made from Ipe, Purple Heart,
Teak, Mahogany, White Oak and Black Locust.
